Under the Strategic Partnerships Program (SPP) of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), the MLTAV is running two Professional Learning projects in the 2012-14 triannium:
"Mentoring for Beginning Teachers of Languages" "Bilingual Schools"
The MLTAV is most grateful for the financial support provided by the DEECD for these projects, as it has allowed us to provide quality, work-place based, ongoing Professional Learning for Languages teachers in Victoria.
The above two networks are for the following priority areas:
• Bilingual Schools – this network will target teachers involved in, or interested in, implementing Bilingual Programs. It will provide an opportunity for teachers to engage in PL targeted directly to meet the specific needs of bilingual school teachers. The network will facilitate the sharing of effective teaching practices and strategies, as well as resources, through both online and face-to-face interaction, including collegiate classroom visits. In 2012 our workshop series is entitled "A Focus on Literacy: Improving Student Learning Outcomes in Bilingual Programs".
• Mentoring for Beginning Teachers of Languages – this project will identify Languages teachers who are in their first five years of service and who are not able to access Language-specific, expert assistance in delivering their programs. The beginning teachers will be matched with accomplished teachers of Languages (through reference to the National Standards for Accomplished Teaching of Languages and Culture). The PL/mentoring will be facilitated primarily online as well as through collegiate classroom visits. Over 3 years, this project will deliver 2 x 18-month programs to cater for two cohorts of beginning teachers.
Both of the proposed networks will involve teachers in action-research based PL, enabling workplace-embedded activities through expert facilitation. Both proposed networks build on the successful experiences of the action-research projects run by the MLTAV supported by SPP funding 2006 - 08 and 2009 - 2011
The MLTAV is currently calling for Expressions of Interest to participate in the Mentoring for Beginning Teachers of Languages Professional Learning Opportunity.
You are invited to participate in this Professional Learning Opportunity which will match Beginning teachers of Languages in their first five years of teaching with Accomplished Languages teachers.
During this 18 month Mentoring project, Languages teachers will have the opportunity to:
participate in quality Professional Learning to update and extend their knowledge and skills of Languages teaching, including free attendance at the MLTAV Conference in 2015 and 2016;
network and collaborate with other teachers of Languages across Victoria using the Professional Standards for Accomplished Teaching and Learning of Language;
undertake collegiate classroom visits to observe their partner's teaching and seek feedback/guidance to support further development; and
be stimulated by reflecting on professional knowledge and practice and develop self-evaluation skills using a framework for effective mentoring and incorporateing the use of ICT.
There is NO CHARGE to participate in this Professional Learning Opportunity and CRT funding is provided to cover attendance at the MLTAV Conference in May, 2015 and 2016 and a collegiate classroom visit in Semester 2, 2015.
Some funding is available to support travel and accommodation for regional participants.
